Commis Chef

The Commis Chef is responsible for assisting in food preparation and supporting the kitchen team in all aspects of cooking, as directed by senior chefs. This role is ideal for individuals looking to start their career in the culinary industry. The Commis Chef helps with basic food preparation, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and learning the standards and techniques required to progress into more senior roles.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- **Food Preparation**:
- Assist in the preparation of ingredients, sauces, and dishes under the guidance of senior kitchen staff.
- Clean and chop vegetables, prepare meats, fish, and other ingredients.
- Follow recipes and cooking techniques to ensure consistency and quality of dishes.
- **Cooking**:
- Cook dishes as directed by the Head Chef, Sous Chef, or other senior chefs.
- Ensure that food is cooked according to the establishment's standards for taste, presentation, and portion control.
- Monitor cooking times and temperatures to avoid undercooking or overcooking food.
- **Kitchen Organization and Cleanliness**:
- Maintain a clean and organized workstation, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of hygiene.
- Regularly clean kitchen equipment, tools, and utensils.
- Follow food safety guidelines and sanitation protocols to ensure a safe and healthy kitchen environment.
- **Stock and Inventory**:
- Assist in the proper storage of food products, ensuring they are labeled and stored correctly to avoid spoilage.
- Help monitor stock levels and report shortages to senior chefs.
- Ensure that ingredients are rotated according to the first-in, first-out (FIFO) method.
- **Team Support**:
- Work collaboratively with the kitchen team to ensure the smooth operation of the kitchen.
- Assist in managing kitchen tasks during peak service times.
- Communicate effectively with other team members to ensure efficient service.
- **Learning and Development**:
- Continuously develop culinary skills and knowledge by learning from senior kitchen staff.
- Participate in kitchen training and attend any required workshops or classes.
- Seek feedback from supervisors to improve food preparation and cooking techniques.
- **Health and Safety**:
- Ensure that all kitchen equipment is used safely and maintained according to health and safety guidelines.
- Follow all hygiene standards for food preparation, including handwashing, sanitizing work surfaces, and proper food handling techniques.
- Adhere to health and safety standards, including wearing appropriate kitchen attire, such as non-slip shoes and chef's jackets.
**Skills and Qualifications**:
- Previous experience in a kitchen or culinary environment is preferred but not required.
- Passion for cooking and eagerness to learn.
- Basic understanding of cooking techniques, food safety, and kitchen hygiene.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to take direction and work well within a team.
- Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions accurately.
**Preferred Qualifications**:
- Culinary school diploma or training is a plus but not mandatory.
- Experience in specific kitchen sections (e.g., pastry, grill, sauté) can be an advantage.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations in the kitchen.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays, depending on the venue’s schedule.
**Physical Requirements**:
- Ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to lift heavy pots, trays, and kitchen equipment.
- Good physical stamina and ability to handle a fast-paced kitchen environment.
**Working Conditions**:
- Work in a fast-paced kitchen environment with varying temperatures.
- May work late hours, evenings, weekends, and public holidays, depending on the establishment's schedule.
- Exposure to hot surfaces, sharp tools, and other kitchen hazards requires following safety protocols.
**Job Type**: Contract
