Key Accountabilities & Activities:

Working relationships:

  • The Lead Physiotherapist and Physiotherapists within the Aspire Academy Sports Medicine Centre, to ensure appropriate daily service provision and to ensure consistency of medical services provided for students across the Aspire Academy.
  • The Multidisciplinary teams to clarify service provision to users, ensure effective communication pathways and to aspire to the provision of a seamless service.
  • Students, ensuring their expectations are established, managed and met.
  • ASPETAR, such as the Sports Medicine Department, to ensure a proper follow up of the Aspire Academy athletes and a continuing provision of care for patients on discharge. Liaise with the Chief of Sports Medicine regarding the referral of Aspire Academy Athletes to Aspetar and to external healthcare institutions for treatment.
  • The NSMP, through the NSMP Director (Medical Services), to contribute to the development and implementation of projects within the Aspire Academy Sports Medicine Centre, that are strategic objectives of the NSMP.

Clinical:

  • Provides primary care to Aspire Academy students in Aspire Academy Sports Medicine Centre in adherence to Aspetar approved clinical practice guidelines. This includes the evaluation, treatment plan and follow up as appropriate.
  • Maintain optimal health and maximizing peak performance of athletes.
  • Diagnose, provide treatment and prevent injuries that occur during sports and physical activities as a medical physician.
  • Provide both long-term and immediate supervision for the physical restoration of individuals.
  • Work as part of a team to ensure effective communication and delivery of care.
  • Maintain patient/student’s documentation, records and accurate statistics information to reflect care provided and meet professional standards and to ensure the service is monitored and evaluated.
  • Communicate and make recommendations to all relevant disciplines of staff to maximize athlete care and promote multidisciplinary team working.
  • Communicate and formulate recommendations to the Aspire Academy administrative and technical staff regarding athletes’ physical and health condition, progress, prognosis and sports activities participation abilities.
  • Contribute in the implementation of ASPETAR approved clinical practice guidelines within the clinic to optimize athletes care.
  • Be responsible for maintaining a high standard of clinical practice both for self and staff under their supervision.
  • Responsible for medical coverage for sporting events in Aspire Academy.
  • Responsible to organize and provide medical coverage for Aspire teams during camps and competitions outside the state of Qatar.
  • Adhere to and actively promote the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) principles and regulations with regard to the use of drugs in sport. Abide by the spirit and letter of the WADA Code, and the ASPETAR/NSMP Anti-Doping Position Statement.

Education:

  • Participate in Sports Medicine in-service training and if necessary lead team in-service training to promote personnel development.
  • Annually, produce and present projects to promote service development and / or personnel development.
  • Promote continuing professional development and support a programme of staff appraisal, clinical supervision and teaching, especially to the staff working within the nominated clinical team.
  • Comply with and be aware of all aspects of the Clinical Governance Agenda e.g. risk, audit, evidence-based practice, personal development and patient involvement, specifically as to how they relate to the Sports Medicine service to ensure the provision of a high-quality service.

Decisions & Judgement

  • Provide a clinical diagnosis and take decisions on treatment which provides optimal athlete care.
  • Prioritize caseload to ensure a performance-based approach to athlete management.
  • Clinical advice and guidance to staff within the Aspire Health Centre
  • Through a structured process of review, manage staff performance issues effectively.

Main Challenges

  • In conjunction with the Medical Director and the Lead Physiotherapist, manage the medical team to ensure the efficient smooth running of the Aspire Health Centre.
  • Initiate and plan new projects to encourage development of the service.
  • Ability to evaluate own practice and that of others to bring about change.
  • Keeping up to date with recent advances in the field of Sports Medicine and to promote the use of evidence-based practice.
  • Forge close links with members of the technical team and to promote the medical service.
  • Develop knowledge, skills and evaluation processes in a wide variety of conditions and athlete groups and become a specialist within particular area of work with involvement in teaching.
  • Undertake a mentally and physically demanding job, whilst at the same time taking care to safeguard their own health and safety as well as colleagues and athletes.

Working Relationships

Athletes

  • Provide and receive information regarding assessment, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment to encourage compliance.
  • Athletes will have a range of medical problems and require the Medical Director/Doctor to utilize developed motivation and persuasion skills to facilitate rehabilitation both in an individual and group setting.

Aspire Academy Sports Medicine Centre Administrative and Technical Staff

  • Share athlete assessment findings and progress with treatment and suggest other professional input requirements within bounds of professional practice and guidelines.
  • Teach a range of athlete management strategies.

Medical Staff (internal / external)

The Sports Medicine Doctors and Physiotherapists within the ASPETAR Team to ensure appropriate daily service provision and to provide consistency to the medical service provided for athletes across ASPETAR and the Aspire Health Centre.

  • Consult senior staff in ASPETAR for advice.
  • Liaise with Chief of Sports Medicine in attaining approval to refer athletes to Aspetar or external clinics for treatment.
  • Delegate tasks to other medical staff,
  • Deal with relevant performance issues with more junior medical staff.
  • Provide information relating to athlete transfer to both internal and external colleagues.

Multidisciplinary team within the specialty

Teach patient medical management strategies to optimize athlete care.

Physiotherapy Staff

Provide athlete assessment findings, progress with treatment and suggest other professional input requirements.

External Organizations

Such as clubs/federations, to ensure a continuing provision of care for athletes who leave Aspire Academy and move on to play in a club/federation in Qatar.

Patient Safety

Attend and successfully complete competencies which focus on patient safety initiatives implemented within Aspetar Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Hospital. Patient Safety Training is an annual requirement, to include all organizational leaders, staff, service and contracted providers.

Necessary knowledge and Experience to be able to do the job:

  • A minimum of 9-11 years of related experience of which a minimum of 3-6 years should be in similar position.
  • The Aspire Academy Sports Medicine Centre Doctor must have an unrestricted medical license and be an MD who is responsible for treating and coordinating the medical care of athletic team members.
  • The primary concern of the Aspire Academy Sports Medicine Centre Doctor is to provide the best medical care for athletes at all levels of participation.
  • In addition, it is desirable for the Aspire Academy Medicine Centre Doctor to have clinical training/experience and administrative skills in some or all of the following:
  • Continuing medical education in sports medicine
  • Membership and participation in a sports medicine society

Skills and Abilities :

  • Possess a fundamental knowledge of emergency care regarding sporting events.
  • Have a working knowledge of trauma, musculoskeletal injuries, and medical conditions affecting the athlete.
  • Experience in pediatric athlete care; treatment and assessment of young athletes and the injuries related to this age group of athletes.
  • Additional training in sports medicine.

Education and Certification requirements:

  • Have an MD in good standing, with an unrestricted license to practice medicine.
  • Degree in Sports Medicine or formal training in sports medicine (fellowship training, board recognized subspecialty in sports medicine [formerly known as a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine])
  • Specialty Board certification
  • Training in advanced cardiac life support mandatory.
