Job Summary:

The Medical Interpreter providescommunication services between patients, and health care providersto ensure the provision of quality health care and patient safety.

Conducts medical interpreting for health care providers, patients,and their families. Assesses and monitors patients'understanding of information conveyed. Advises medical personnelabout any cultural issues that might impact patient care. Recordsand monitors interpretation activities according to hospital anddepartment standards. May be required to translate writtendocuments.

Key role:

  • Contributes towards patient safety,quality and patient experience through interaction assistanceprovided; the interpreted conversation will impact the patientconclusions and health care provider decisions.
  • Workswith non-English speaking patients.
  • Facilitates medicalservice by interpreting language between patients/families andhealth care providers accurately and completely by usinginternational best practices.
  • Clarifies information thatcannot be literally translated from one language into another inorder to facilitate understanding between the health care providerand patients/families.
  • Ability to interpret over thephone if required.
  • Maintains a professional distance andnon-judgmental attitude when providing interpreter services.
  • Carries out the required medical and non-medicalinterpretation activities for the assigned shift.
  • Maintains language assistance with clinical follow-up or dischargeinstructions.
  • Delivers dynamic language services from adiverse cultural perspective, to promote superior interpersonalcommunications with all stakeholders.
  • Sets tone of thepatient/provider encounter to manage spatial configuration and flowof communication to preserve accuracy and completeness, and toassess and address potential areas of discomfort for patient (age,gender of interpreter, no previous experience with interpreters).
  • Supports in selected organizational initiatives, wheremedical interpretation services are requested.
  • Collaborates with patient and family educators when required toassist in the provision of clear and concise educational literaturein appropriate languages.
  • Actively contributes tomaintaining high standards of quality, patient safety and ensurespatient experience is maintained.
  • Requires familiaritywith medical terminology and maintain high knowledge of medicalterminology.
  • Operates in compliance with interpreter andhospital policies and procedures, particularly those relating topatient confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates a high knowledgeof local citizens' preferences and high culturalawareness.
  • Maintains an organized and clean appearancein all work areas and follow Sidra's dress code.
  • Attends and participates in departmental / facilityprojects and initiatives, and wears Sidra's uniform ifrequested.
  • Works well under pressure to manage stressfulsituations.
  • Flexible to meet scheduling needs and handleoften unpredictable changes.
  • Participates with any newassigned project.
  • Follows the latest trend in the field.

  • Proficiencywith Microsoft Office suite
  • Fluency in written andspoken English and Arabic or other required language.
