Job Description

University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) is the first national applied University in the State of Qatar, offering applied Bachelors and Master's degrees in addition to certificates and diplomas in various fields. UDST has over 50 programs in the fields of Engineering Technology and Industrial Trades, Business Management, Computing and Information Technology, Health Sciences, STEM/TVET Education, Continuing and Professional Education and more.

The College of General Education provides a range of core courses common to all students of the University in subject areas that support the academic structure of the undergraduate programs. The General Education Curriculum is designed around core courses in Mathematics and Natural Sciences, as well as research methods, aimed at developing students' understanding of fundamental scientific concepts and their applications. Additionally, required courses in English Communication and a strategic selection of topics in the Social Sciences, Humanities and the Arts enable students to broaden their understanding of the specific aspirations of the State of Qatar through its National Vision (QNV2030), to increase awareness of contemporary global developments in all spheres of life and to contextualize student learning in the specific challenges of the region where they will apply their knowledge, skills and competencies after graduation.

To enhance the General Education Curriculum in topics related to Qatar History, Islamic and Arab Civilization, Economic and Human Development, Regional Social Studies and Policy Making, the College of General Education invites applications for a faculty position in GCC History and Social Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, starting August 2024.

Your Commitment

Reporting to the Head of Department, the ideal candidate should be a creative and innovative individual with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in effective teaching and research. The candidate will plan, develop, and deliver courses in Contemporary History of Qatar and the Region, Islamic and Arab Civilization, Human Development, Law and Society, Ethical Reasoning, as well as other contemporary social studies topics around sustainability that support the General Education Curriculum and the achievement of the University Graduate Attributes. The Assistant Professor will work predominantly with first and second-year students of Business, Computing, Engineering and Health Sciences, developing in them the ability to explore the wider social implications of an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

Teaching & Learning

  • Demonstrate competence with course development, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrate fluent ability to design and deliver teaching materials across various courses using student-centred strategies with appropriate learning supports.
  • Commitment to creating and evaluating authentic assessment tools that validly and reliably measure mastery of course learning outcomes while promoting lifelong learning.
  • Demonstrate ability to use a variety of educational technology and learning platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable students to be active participants in their education.
  • Digital literacy and demonstrated fluency in learning management systems and an ability to model and facilitate the use of current and emerging digital platforms committed to student learning and feedback.
  • Manage the resources of the learning environment and course portfolio documents required for program review and accreditation processes.
Scholarship & Research
  • Contribution to the advancement of knowledge through applied research, publications, knowledge transfer or professional practice, which would be expected to be international in scope.
  • Establish relevant professional memberships or affiliations with industry and academic bodies to grow UDST's research network.
  • Generate research projects with university, national, and international impact and profile that align with UDST's applied research mission and Qatar's 2030 National Vision.

QualificationsEducation & Experience Requirements
  • A PhD degree in History, Social Studies, Political Science, Public Policy, Human Development, with a focus on GCC, from a recognized university where English is the medium of instruction.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of full-time teaching experience in higher education institutions.
  • Preference will be given to qualified candidates who have experience teaching in English-speaking countries or institutions, and whose teaching dossier and research plan best qualify them to fulfil an interdisciplinary role in the Social Sciences Department.
