Detailed Job Description

Context
Hayat Universal School (HUBS) Qatar is a PreK – 12 British Columbia Certified Offshore School operating in Doha, Qatar. HUBS Qatar offers the BC Program along with a national program of Arabic Language, Islamic Education and Qatar History. The school bilingual programs attract Qatari families and the vast majority of students are English Language Learners (ELL). Most students join the school at the preschool program level. Being an offshore school, HUBS depends heavily on its educational leadership team, comprised of the Principal and BC Program Heads, for implementing the BC curriculum and operating the school to achieve the school mission and learning goals of developing Effective Communicators, Reflective Thinkers, Responsible Individuals and Global Muslims.

Purpose
The BC Program Head position is of an academic vice-principal level. The BC Program Head supports the school Principal primarily in the Principal's instructional leadership role. The Principal strives to deliver a rigorous educational program for HUBS' predominantly ELL population. The aim is to create a professional and positive school climate, where adults are collaborating to engage students in meaningful and strategically focused learning in a nurturing and safe environment. Student achievement must be measured based on the BC Ministry of Education standards and the school learning goals.

Detailed Duties

The BC Program Head leading specific grade levels assumes the following responsibilities:

  1. Planning for Instruction and Assessment
    1. Leading/contributing to discussions within teacher and admin teams to develop policies for instruction, assessment, reporting, homework, student co-curricular and extracurricular activities and student support with consideration for the needs of the student body who is predominantly Qatari and is ELL;
    2. Selecting instructional programs and frameworks to bring the structure and consistency required for effective delivery of the BC curriculum while considering the fluid nature of staffing in International schools;
    3. Identifying instructional strategies that will support teacher instruction, in addition to the mandated strategies;
    4. Selecting learning resources required for the BC curriculum;
    5. Preparing or leading the preparation of materials such as professional teacher resources and student resources;
    6. Leading the development of class lists with student grouping that minimizes the heterogeneity of reading levels within one class;
    7. Leading and supporting teachers as they develop year plans/course overviews, unit plans, weekly newsletters and daily lesson plans;
    8. Monitoring Instruction, Assessment and Student Achievement;
    9. Making regular classroom visits to monitor the consistent use of required daily plans;
    10. Reviewing exam papers before administration;
    11. Collecting and reviewing samples of instructional plans and student classwork;
    12. Supervising exam invigilation;
    13. Monitoring the use of formative and summative assessment;
    14. Reviewing and signing student progress reports;
    15. Monitoring materials published on the Student Information System;
    16. Reviewing and analyzing student assessment data.
  2. Managing Behavior and Discipline
    1. Contributing to developing schoolwide policies and procedures for behavior management and student discipline;
    2. Monitoring the implementation of school policies during classroom visitations;
    3. Supporting teachers in communicating with parents regarding behavior.
  3. Identifying and Supporting At-Risk Students
    1. Contributing to the development of a process to identify at-risk students;
    2. Working with teachers and counselors to ensure timely identification and support for at-risk students.
  4. Coaching Teachers
    1. Leading weekly meetings for grade-level team collaboration;
    2. Working with teachers during class visitations or through one-to-one meetings;
    3. Modeling best teaching practices and the use of school mandated resources.
  5. Engaging Parents
    1. Coaching teachers to engage parents and support school policies;
    2. Meeting with parents to discuss concerns and educate them about school programs;
    3. Planning activities that integrate parents into school life.
  6. Entry Assessment
    1. Reviewing and updating entry assessments;
    2. Reviewing entry assessments administered by teachers.
  7. Professional Development
    1. Contributing to annual plans for professional development;
    2. Identifying sources for professional development opportunities;
    3. Planning and offering professional development in areas of expertise.
  8. General School Leadership Duties
    1. Working with the school administration team to plan student activities;
    2. Participating in the supervision of recess;
    3. Contributing to school improvement through policy/procedure development.
Requirements
  1. Evidence of effective teaching abilities in relevant grade levels;
  2. The planning, organization and communication skills needed for managerial positions;
  3. A genuine commitment to do the very best for learners;
  4. Experience in planning and delivering professional development events;
  5. A valid British Columbia professional teaching license;
  6. Preferably a minimum of ten years of full-time teaching experience;
  7. Teacher academic leadership experience in schools offering competency-based curricula.
