Job Description

The Medical Laboratory Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the efficient operation of the laboratory by performing a variety of essential tasks that ensure the timely processing of laboratory tests. This position involves collecting, labeling, and preparing biological samples for analysis, maintaining laboratory equipment, and ensuring adherence to safety and quality control standards. The Medical Laboratory Assistant collaborates with laboratory technologists and other healthcare professionals to facilitate accurate diagnostic testing, contributing to patient care. Ultimately, the purpose of this role is to provide critical support to laboratory operations, ensuring that sample processing is carried out efficiently and effectively to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

Key Responsibilities:

General Duties Include:
  1. Maintain sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment for performance of duties, coordinate preparation and procurement of chemicals, reagents, stains and solutions as appropriate.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency with hospital and departmental practices that reflect Joint Commission, COLA, CLIA, CMS, OSHA, HIPAA, Quality Improvement, and EPA Water Testing Standards and performs work at a level to meet these standards; demonstrate technical proficiency through successful participation in laboratory Proficiency Testing programs.
  3. Maintain and protect the confidentiality of patient information.
  4. Accountable for maintaining and improving own laboratory knowledge and skill competence.
  5. Provide patient care that promotes the safety and well-being of all patients in the hospital and clinic departments on a 24-hour basis.
  6. Support the hospital's philosophy, objectives and goals and organization mission and vision.
  7. Respect and support patient rights.
  8. Promote and practice positive customer and peer relations and cost containment for the Laboratory Department and patient.
  9. Foster constructive relationships as a team member within the Laboratory and with the members of other departments.
  10. Maintain professional conduct.
  11. Participate in orientation and in-service training for personnel.
  12. Assist in reviewing and revising policies and procedures. Strong computer skills desired.
  13. Support and enforce infection control policies and procedures.
Pre-analytic:
  1. Communicate in a professional and courteous manner with patients, family, and other medical personnel, as necessary.
  2. Maintain responsibility for patient identification, specimen labeling and collection verification.
  3. Instruct healthcare providers and clinicians in collection and preservation techniques of specimens for analysis on both adult and pediatric patients.
  4. Prepare specimens for shipment to reference laboratory employing appropriate methods for packaging potential infectious or hazardous materials.
Analytic:
  1. Work with other laboratory staff members in all areas of the laboratory, or as assigned, to complete patient specimen analysis.
  2. Perform quality control procedures, ensuring validity and accuracy of test results.
  3. Serve to cover laboratory needs outside of routine hours by sharing on-call duties with other Laboratory Technologists.
Post analytic:
  1. Coordinate and participate in performance and interpretation of complex technical duties in support of medical laboratory testing; record determinations and results for review by physician/provider staff; perform a variety of assays on human, veterinary and environmental specimens.
  2. Proficiently and consistently complete accurate, concise and legible documentation of laboratory testing results and records. Includes documentation of maintenance, quality control, calibration, and other laboratory records.
  3. Ensure remedial action is taken and documented whenever testing systems deviate from established performance specifications.

Qualifications

Job Requirements:
  1. Must possess current skills in blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology and urinalysis.
  2. Ability to demonstrate dexterity, knowledge, and ability to complete assigned laboratory tasks and skills, attention to detail and compliance with all appropriate regulatory and safety requirements including standard precautions and hazardous chemical handling.
  3. Require knowledge and analytic abilities to perform highly complex testing, to interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instrumentation and review testing performed by other technologists.
  4. Working knowledge of and ability to implement the requirements for COLA, CLIA, and CLIP Laboratory Accreditation.
  5. Ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control standards.
  6. Considerable knowledge of laboratory equipment, instrumentation and terminology; considerable knowledge of computers and computerized lab equipment.
  7. Experience involving patient contact, customer service in a medical setting, strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  8. Must possess visual acuity required to distinguish fine gradations of color and/or texture.
  9. Proficient oral and written communication abilities in English.
  10. Flexible and willing to work in a culturally diverse environment.
  11. Applicants for the laboratory technologist position must demonstrate the absence of color blindness as evaluated by a color vision screening examination (Ishihara or equivalent).
Experience Required:
  1. Minimum of 5 years of experience.
Education Required:
  1. Bachelor's degree in biology / chemistry or medical laboratory science, or in a related scientific field with a demonstrated internship in an approved clinical laboratory training program, or equivalent.
  2. Current certification with a nationally recognized registry such as MT(ASCP) or home country equivalent.
  3. Obtain provided American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).
Physical Requirements:
  1. Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  2. Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  3. May require bending, stooping and lifting up to 15 lbs.
Other Special Qualifications:
  1. On call requirements as part of a rotation if required.
  2. Must be able to read, write and speak English to effectively communicate.
  3. This position is unaccompanied.
  4. Ability to obtain a base security clearance.
  5. Must be able to relocate to Doha, Qatar.
  6. A valid passport from Country of Record is required and must be in your possession prior to relocation. You must maintain a current passport during your stay in Qatar.

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant's background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
