Metals Conservator

Key Accountabilities:
Role Purpose: The Conservator will be expected to carry out conservation treatments on the Museum’s metals and jewellery collections, care for their physical safety-stability and keep detailed records of the work carried out. Communicate the metal conservation activities with his/ her colleagues, special interest groups and occasionally the general public.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Customer Accountabilities - Visiting Academics and Scholars
- Process Accountabilities - To follow correct policies and procedures in relation to the ones by QM
- Staff Accountabilities - To work as part of the Collections Division and provide accurate information to MIA staff
- Assist with day to day running of the laboratory
- Responsible for all conservation matters relating to metal & jewellery
- Be familiar with condition surveys with the ability to undertake same
- Have a good knowledge of monitoring and controlling the environment in which collections are stored or displayed to prevent deterioration
- Must be able to work within a team, be flexible and self motivated. Liaising with museum curators, registrars and other colleagues
- Assist with setting up exhibitions
- Take supervisory roles occassionaly
- Preventive conservation and care of collections with interest into metals and jewelry.
- Packing objects for transport and accompanying objects in transit to other locations if required
- Organizing the logistics of long term projects and collaborating with other conservators.
- Must be computer literate and be able to make presentations on her/his projects.
- Any other activity as described by the Head for Conservation
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience
- Must have a recognized degree in conservation
- A recognised post-graduate degree and/or PhD are desirable
- Be familiar with metals technology and deterioration of metals
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong research ability (scientific, academic, etc.) issues that relate to metal conservation
- Ability to work individually and as part of a team
- Professional and friendly manner
- Interested in professional development
- Communication in Arabic and/or other languages
- Knowledge in Islamic Art
- Have a good network of specialised contacts
