The **British Embassy** in **Doha **is part of a worldwide network that represents political, economic, security and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a **Deputy Director of Trade & Head of Business Engagement**, job grade Senior Executive Officer (SEO).

This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic, energetic and highly-motivated individual to play a key and impactful leadership role in the Embassy’s Department for Business and Trade (DBT) team.

DIT brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment in markets across the world to help businesses succeed.

You will play an instrumental role in the success of the UK’s business and trade objectives for Qatar, primarily through providing leadership and oversight of the team’s business engagement and export promotion work—backbones of the Embassy’s overall approach to achieving commercial outcomes.

This will mean being responsible for developing and implementing our exports and business engagement strategy, action plans, and trade promotion work in this area, working through and empowering a number of Senior Commercial Attaches who lead certain sectors and campaigns. You will have line management responsibility for them.

You will deploy your business engagement skills to guide the utilisation of our engagement resources (trade missions, events & receptions, VIP visits etc.) in a way which is creative, impactful and strategic, working to achieve this with the Director for Business & Trade.

In addition to helping set direction and establish action plans, you will be responsible for resource and budget management, business planning, data management and information reporting.

You will also deputise for the Director where needed, helping to deliver representational work such as participation in conferences, meetings with senior stakeholders, and public events.

You will work as part of a friendly, collegiate and dynamic team with great ambitions, which themselves are part of a cross-departmental Embassy with a range of goals across the political, economic, and security spectrum. Critically, you will need to connect the dots across these teams.

You’ll be required to be generous and flexible with your time, working with others to support other initiatives where required, including across the Embassy’s other teams and in key standing functions such as crisis preparedness.

**Duties and responsibilities**:

- Exports & Business Engagement: Take responsibility for the team’s exports and business engagement objectives. Provide leadership to the export team across the key sectors of Defence & Security, Human Capital (healthcare and education), creative & sports economy, clean growth and infrastructure. Overall responsibility for delivering against a commercial pipeline, utilising the range of activities and levers available to UK Government.
- Line Management: Manage 3xHEO Senior Commercial Attaches. Countersign for 2xAO officers.
- VIP Visits: Deliver VIP visits as required. Qatar is a busy Post with frequent Ministerial and VIP visits, and you’ll be expected to support the DBT Director and your team, as well as lead on visits when required.
- Operational: Lead on all operational aspects of the team, including being responsible for effective and accurate budget management, management information, the export pipeline, and other KPIs. Conduct recruitment activities, events forecasting & resource planning, a range of management reporting outputs, often requiring quick turn-around and being the DBT team information asset manager.
- Corporate: Be a positive role model and contributor to the Embassy. Take up additional duties related to crisis response, including training and exercise planning.
