Journalist - Assignment

To take responsibility and accountability as a member of the team by contributing to the management of the daily news agenda across all platforms, driving key stories ‘on the day’ news coverage and deliver high quality content whilst managing deadlines and all resources to an exemplary high standard.
**Main Duties & Responsibilities**:
- To work on the assignment desk, execute daily news coverage plans, commissioning, TV and digital content from correspondents in the field with consultation with Producers, EP’s and Editors
- To manage, select and deliver material from newsgathering teams, particularly reporters in the field.
- Work closely with Producers, Senior Producers and Editors to agree priorities and allocate relevant resources.
- Produce timely and accurate content for the main stories of the day and support the coverage of breaking news.
- If required, conduct and record risk assessments in line with the company security and safety policy.
- Dealing with live ‘breaking news’ and developing ideas resulting into successful creative programme with speed.
- Write, translate and adapt items, news stories or programme material and to edit packages at the desktop
- To liaise closely with team colleagues and all contributors, reporters, stringers and when commissioning material, to provide effective guidance and support
- Liaise with correspondents and producers, gathering information and advice on stories and coverage
- Provide ideas and suggestions for programmes, stories and attend pre programme and planning meetings when required
- Undertake pre & post-production, and studio work, both live and pre-recorded.
- To work with technical systems and manage a range of video, audio and digital equipment and other technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes to an exceptional high standard whilst in the appropriate medium
- Produce graphics at the desktop and in collaboration with graphic designers.
- Work closely with correspondents and producers to ensure effective television packages and live broadcasting is delivered on time and to a consistent high standard
- Provide proactive support and assist in forward planning with bookings
- Gather information and advice on running stories from the field by fact finding and undertaking background research to support the Newsroom
- Sound knowledge of conditions of service and general terms of employment relating to employees and freelancers
- Develop and maintain accurate, comprehensive and daily diaries and contact details
- Assisting Producers and Senior Producers in managing staff in the field
- Promote and encourage team work and collaboration
- To be responsible for a moving story, amending and updating material as required in order to build compelling and engaging news sequences.
- To assist in planning next day or longer term coverage, booking two-ways and packages from correspondents in the field, and a range of related tasks.
- To liaise with correspondents, gathering advice on stories and coverages and providing support.
- To offer ideas for stories and items, programmes and series, attending pre-programme and planning meetings as required. To suggest new angles and formats on existing stories in order to bring them to life for the audience.
- To be up to date with the main stories, fact checking; undertaking background research as required.
- To think through and around editorial problems.
- To liaise closely with other team members and with contributors, reporters and stringers and when commissioning material to give effective guidance.
- To undertake pre and post production and studio work, live and pre-recorded. After appropriate training, use a range of video, audio & digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
- To be familiar with different technical systems, including news production systems, demonstrate a willingness to learn to operate new technology systems and to be able to adapt to different working methods.
- To understand changes in the media industry and upcoming digital transformation and the use of modern technologies.
- To find contributors and interviewees when required, as well as other sources of material and/or actuality, as appropriate and to the required specification.
- Occasional deployment in the field for the right person with the appropriate technical expertise and editorial judgement.
- To observe and carry out any requirement outlined in Alaraby’s safety policy and specifically to conduct risk assessments when appropriate.
- To carry out the above duties and responsibilities in accordance with applicable legal obligations, including broadcast regulations specifically in accordance with the Ofcom Code.
**Essential**:
- Able to demonstrate strategic, conceptual and analytical skills including a solid understanding of Journalistic and Editorial knowledge.
