Evaluates patients’ medical histories to ensure the various medical imaging procedures will not harm them.
- Suggests alternative medical imaging techniques, when necessary.
- Informs patients about the medical imaging process.
- Uses devices such as computer tomography (CT) scanners and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines, mammograms and others.
- Performs or directs radiology staff to carry out image-guided, diagnostic procedures.
- Works with radiology technicians to perfect image quality.
- Interprets the results from diagnostic imaging procedures to determine diagnoses. Reviews and transmits images and information using picture archiving and communications systems.
- Communicates examination results and diagnostic information to referring physicians, patients, and families.
- Provides counseling to radiologic patients to explain the processes, risks, benefits, and alternative treatments.
- Compiles written reports of results and diagnoses.
- Coordinates radiological services with other medical activities. Documents performance, interpretation, and outcomes of procedures performed.
- Establishes and enforces standards for protection of patients and staff.
- Following medical protocols for resuscitation, bleeding, infection, or other emergency situations, when necessary.
- Participates in quality improvement activities including discussions of areas where risk of error is high.
- Implements protocols in areas such as drugs, resuscitation, emergencies, power failures, and infection control.
- Other duties assigned from time to time.
