**Overview**:
Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics nurses play a crucial role in supporting
children and adolescents with developmental and behavioral challenges. They work
closely with pediatricians and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive
care for patients with conditions such as autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and other
developmental delays.
This role involves initial screening for developmental and behavioral disorders, ongoing
monitoring, and coordination of care across multiple settings, including schools and
other facilities. The nurse plays a crucial role in supporting the senior consultant clinic
and implementing developmental screening programs.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Initial Assessments: Conduct the first point of clinical contact by assessing vital
signs and gathering essential health information of children presenting with
developmental and behavioral concerns.
- Child Evaluation: Perform comprehensive initial screening to identify
developmental and behavioral needs, focusing on conditions like ASD, ADHD,
developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and syndromes.
- Chaperoning the senior consultant in their assessment of children.
- Educating patients and their families about developmental and behavioral
disorders, treatment options, and community resources.
- Providing support and guidance to families as they navigate the healthcare
system and access services.
- Care Coordination: Act as a liaison between the child, family, healthcare team,
schools, and other facilities to ensure a cohesive care plan and continuity of care.
- Clinic Administration: Assist in the administration of the senior consultant clinic,
including scheduling, maintaining medical records, and coordinating care.
- Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to develop individualized care plans
for patients.
- Developmental Screening: Administer and coordinate developmental screening,
processes, ensuring accurate and timely assessment of developmental
milestones.
- Communication: Maintain effective communication with all stakeholders,
including caregivers, educators, and healthcare professionals, to facilitate
integrated care and support for the child.
- Education and Training: Participate in and provide training related to
developmental and behavioral assessments and interventions, ensuring best
practice and up to date knowledge in the field.
- Monitoring patients’ progress and adjusting care plans as needed.
- Advocating for patients and families to ensure they receive the support and
services they need.
- Participating in research and quality improvement initiatives to advance the field
of developmental and behavioral Pediatrics.
**Required Competencies**:
- Clinical Skills: Proficient in pediatric nursing, including vital signs assessment,
developmental screening, and emergency interventions (the centre does not
provide acute or emergency care), however, Pediatric life support competency is
required.
- specialized training or experience in developmental and behavioral Pediatrics
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability
to convey complex information to diverse audiences.
- Interpersonal Skills: Empathy and sensitivity in dealing with children and families
facing developmental and behavioral challenges.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced
clinical environment.
- Teamwork: Collaborative mindset to work effectively within multidisciplinary
teams.
- Continuous Learning: Commitment to ongoing professional development and
staying current with advancements in pediatric healthcare.
Training:
Comprehensive training will be provided in developmental and behavioral Pediatrics for
tools.
