Metal Conservator

Key Accountabilities:
**Role Purpose**:The objects conservator specialized in metal will carry out preventive/interventive/remedial conservation of metal collections and be responsible for care and preservation of the items at NMoQ and other required places.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Be responsible for all conservation matters relating to metal collections
- Perform conservation documentation and update EMu records including condition reports, treatment proposals, and treatment reports.
- Documents, examines, researches and carries out conservation treatments on a wide variety of 3dimentional metal objects from archaeological to modern in the collections.
- Develops and implements conservation and collections care policies and procedures in collaboration with curators, Collections and Documentation Team, and registrars.
- Surveys collections in collaboration with curators and Collections and Documentation Team to assess the condition of objects and assess conservation needs.
- Provides conservation guidance to Collections, Gallery Team, Exhibitions and Curatorial to establish, monitor, and maintain proper environmental conditions in the museum.
- Supervises and/or assists curatorial, art-handlers, mount makers, and interns in the handling, mounting, care, and storage of art objects.
- Active participation in periodic training sessions, educational presentations for staff and student interns and professional meetings
- Assists the daily operation of the conservation laboratories including the organization, maintenance and ordering of equipment and inventory of supplies.
- Practices all building security, storage, reporting, and safety protocols and regulations and working closely with the Curatorial, Collections and Gallery Team to prepare disaster, emergency, security and risk management plans.
- Transports collections as a courier when required.
- Implements regular inspection of showcases, open displays, collection storages, temporary gallery exhibition and public art.

Qualifications/Requirements:

- Master’s Degree in Conservation from an internationally recognized program
- Minimum 9 years’ full-time experience in an institutional setting or equivalent
- Broad knowledge of theory and practice and demonstrated ability in the conservation of metal
- Technical knowledge with instrumentation and testing as required for treatments and research (ex. pXRF data and X-ray image interpretation skills)
- Experience in conservation treatment of jewelleries.
- Familiar with archaeological metal conservation techniques (ex.de
- Ability to work to deadlines both independently and collaboratively with conservators, collections staff and curators
- Ability to produce excellent condition and treatment reports in electronic formats as well as high quality digital photo documentation
- Enthusiasm to train and mentor conservation assistants and students
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and database software
- Knowledge of current conservation survey techniques
- Knowledge of environmental monitoring equipment (and HVAC systems helpful)
- Ability to solve problems and improvise using local resources
- Sensitivity and adaptability to cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality, and age
- A sense of adventure, flexibility, and generous team spirit
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to organize and manage projects.
- International art courier experience
- Mount making or fabrication skills
- Familiar with the database software (EMu preferred)
- Knowledge of Islamic metal work technology
- Communication in Arabic and/or other languages
- Basic knowledge of Islamic Art and History
