Kitchen Steward – Job Description

Position Summary:

The Kitchen Steward is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of the kitchen and related areas. This role supports chefs and kitchen staff by ensuring all equipment, utensils, and workspaces are clean, safe, and ready for use. The steward plays a key part in maintaining hygiene standards and smooth kitchen operations.

Key Responsibilities:Cleaning & Sanitation

  • Wash and sanitize dishes, pots, pans, utensils, and kitchen equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness of kitchen floors, walls, counters, and food prep areas.
  • Clean and sanitize workstations, dishwashing area, and storage rooms.
  • Follow proper waste disposal and recycling procedures.

Equipment & Supplies

  • Operate dishwashing machines and ensure proper maintenance.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment to supervisors.
  • Restock clean dishes, glassware, silverware, and kitchen tools.
  • Maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and request replenishments when needed.

Kitchen Support

  • Assist chefs and cooks with basic tasks when required (e.g., receiving deliveries, storing goods).
  • Help in organizing walk-in coolers, freezers, and dry storage.
  • Ensure all kitchen equipment is properly stored and accessible.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all food safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards.
  • Adhere to workplace safety practices and wear required protective gear.
  • Prevent cross-contamination and ensure proper handling of chemicals.

Qualifications & Skills

  • No formal education required; experience in a kitchen or hospitality environment is an advantage.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical stamina for lifting, standing, and working long hours.
  • Attention to detail and strong work ethic.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Exposure to heat, humidity, and cleaning chemicals.
