Summary of the role

The AMI Communication Engineer is responsible for effective conduct of testing, maintenance, and repair works for ensuring full functionality of the telecom equipment utilized within the Automated Metering Instructions (AMI) telecommunication system. The role holder is also responsible for ensuring a secure Client AMI telecommunication network and catering to the high priority operational needs.

The role

  1. Leads in diagnosing and correcting problems related to the Smart Metering Solution field equipment and runs daily health checks, i.e. Electricity meters, Water gateways, DCUs, Communication equipment involved in Data Center-to-Smart Metering.
  2. Responsible for pro-active monitoring and repair of the last mile communication including smart meter communications, data concentrators, GPRS, 3G/4G, NBIoT, and RF at Last mile.
  3. Follow up and coordinate with metering vendors and communication service providers for fault rectification, SLA breach, and new technology evaluation.
  4. NMS application monitoring and configuration, including change of device parameters.
  5. Ensures effective functioning of the telecom media utilized throughout the telecom network.
  6. Forecast corrective and preventive maintenance of all telecom media including Wired and Wireless equipment to maintain the quality, reliability, and full functionality of the telecom equipment.
  7. Responds to emergencies based on information on emergency action required from customer queries or complaints.
  8. Prepare and coordinate annual schedules for conducting routine maintenance and repair of the telecom equipment.
  9. Prepares monthly progress reports based on the work activities conducted and customer complaints resolved.
  10. Works in cooperation with Quality Assurance and Continual Improvement section on securing and maintaining the ISO/Risk Management/ISMS certification.
  11. Ensures compliance of all activities within the Department in line with Client health and safety regulations.
  12. Performs other tasks that may be assigned from time to time.
  13. This position may require traveling between venues/depots during normal and/or outside office hours for site work such as configurations, installations, inspections, and any site-related works.
  14. This position requires mobile communication outside normal office hours for emergency purposes.

The person

  1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Telecommunication Engineering.
  2. +10 years' experience in a technical field as a telecom/electrical engineer supervising installation, commissioning, configuration, testing, and maintenance of telecommunication equipment.
  3. Experience with IoT wireless Technologies such as LPWANS, Wi-Fi, Event Stream Processing, Cellular (4G/5G), Zigbee, and other mesh protocols.
  4. Most recent experience (at least 3 years) in installation, configuration, and O&M of different types of smart meters communication, data concentrator/gateways, and IoT devices.
  5. Sound knowledge of wireless communication, cellular communication technology, MBUS technology, Radio Frequency Technology, and Networking for effective conduct of work activities and configuration of communication equipment as needed.
  6. Hands-on experience with Head-end systems and Meter data management applications as an advanced level user. Experience with Siemens EnergyIP and Siemens SIE UDIS is preferred.
  7. Experienced with SIM-based smart meter communication, establishing service level KPI, field installation, and troubleshooting processes/procedures.
  8. Strong command of English (writing and speaking) is essential. Good command of Arabic (writing and speaking) is a plus.
