Our client, a major LNG Operator in Qatar, is hiring for Head of Welding Engineering to work for a Multi-Billion LNG expansion project. This is a contract and residential role to be based in Qatar.

Job Purpose
  • Responsible for stewarding Welding engineering activities and reviewing the related deliverables during the Project EPC phase.
  • Review of Contractor's and Vendors' welding deliverables including Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs) and welding qualification and testing procedures.
  • Support the QA/QC effort in welding qualification and control of welds.
Reporting And RelationshipsInternal: Reports to NFS Onshore Engineering Manager (Qatargas Major Projects)
External: Other Qatargas Engineering Departments and their SMEs.Job Context & Major Challenge(s)

Provide extensive welding knowledge and understanding on the FEED and EPC requirements. Communicating and efficiently translating Company welding requirements into an efficient delivery from the EPC contractor. Collaborate across disciplines (including Structural, Mechanical, HSES and Risk), and monitor the progress and delivery of the engineering sections of the work scope. Collaborate extensively with the PMT QA/QC function.

Key Job Accountabilities
  • Stewards the Welding Engineering activities and ensures the welding engineering scope is fully understood and implemented by the EPC Contractor and its Vendors/Suppliers.
  • Performs as a focal point for all welding matters on all types of metals (e.g., welding of conventional alloys, welding and welding overlay of Corrosion Resistance Alloys - CRA, etc.) on all equipment, packages and components (e.g., piping, static equipment, valves, etc.).
  • Exhibits full understanding of the challenges of the welding scope and supervises the EPC scope elaboration concerning welding.
  • Responsible for overall guidance on all welding engineering deliverables in terms of coverage, quality and schedule as per Projects requirements, particularly the welding and testing procedures and their associated qualification procedures.
  • Interacts with the EPC Contractor and its subcontractors and vendors on welding engineering matters and reviews and approves all Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and their associated qualification and testing procedures.
  • Reviews, as necessary, all EPC contractor and vendor engineering and procurement documentation with welding components (e.g., deliverables such as Data sheets, Material specifications, technical specifications, Material Requisitions, and technical Bid evaluation, etc.).
  • Interprets and provides guidance on the application of project specifications, design codes, and procedures for the control of production test programs, welding, and NDE qualifications.
  • Contributes to the oversight of material acquisition including requisitioning, fabrication, testing, and transportation (e.g., for piping, valves, vessels, etc.).
Supports Closely The QA/QC Group
  • Acts as focal point for all aspects of welding, including NDT.
  • Participates in EPC Contractor's welding audit program (audit plan, schedule, checklist, reports, etc.).
  • Verifies that construction Welding & NDT quality systems and procedures to ensure they are implemented in compliance with the requirements of the approved Quality Management Systems.
  • Closely coordinates with other engineering disciplines and groups (mainly the QA/QC, Construction) for proper understanding and coordinated implementation of the welding engineering requirements.
  • Liaises, as required, with company's shareholders Technical Authorities (TA) (Subject Matter Experts - SMEs) and committees on matters related to welding.
  • Supports the fabrication and construction effort by interpreting Project Specifications and applicable standards and procedures to elaborate welding production and testing programs.
  • Works with the EPC contractor to ensure their welding production and testing processes are robust, fully documented, and appropriately resourced and implemented.
  • Administers any management of change process (MOC) related to the Welding discipline.
  • Ensures compliance with management of change procedures for changes in the contractor's design or deviations from the company directives.
Minimum RequirementsQualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Metallurgical, or Welding Engineering. (Advanced degree is desirable.)
Knowledge And/or Experience:
  • 15+ years of relevant experience as Welding Specialist in the oil and gas major capital projects environment.
  • Detailed Knowledge in the International Codes and Standards and Good Engineering Practices applicable to the LNG facilities.
  • Significant experience in working with EPC Contractors and interfacing with equipment suppliers.
  • Competent and sound knowledge for Welding and WPS/PQRs.
  • Demonstrated ability and sensitivity to work with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
Technical And Business Skills:
  • A high level of proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and other relevant applications.
  • Excellent communication/written skills and ability to work with different disciplines.
  • High awareness of safe working practices associated with design, construction, installation, pre-commissioning, and commissioning of LNG facilities.
