Job Overview:

The Principal Electrical Engineer should have a detailed knowledge of design techniques and Manager or Project Manager analysis methods, and detailed knowledge of the theory, content and application of standards, codes. Functional: Supervising Engineer, Engineering and guidelines as applicable for offshore.

Manager & Discipline Manager Knowledgeable in project coordination and execution skills.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  1. Become fully familiar with the project scope of work, specifications, schedule and all inter-discipline requirements; including identifying concerns as early as practicable and taking appropriate initiatives to address the issues. Interpret contractual requirements as they relate to engineering execution.
  2. Identify changes to scope and promptly raise change notifications, including providing any necessary supporting documentation and estimates. Provide similar support for Variation Orders.
  3. Interface with all disciplines to develop clash-free designs.
  4. Interface with other departments to obtain input for Discipline designs and drawings.
  5. Maintain close co-ordination with other engineering disciplines, Planning, Fabrication/Construction, Marine/Hook-up Commissioning and Project Management Team as required.
  6. Document substantive communications and forward copies to Discipline Lead Engineer and Discipline Manager.
  7. Prepare estimates for bid proposals, including technical query reviews, execution statements and workhour estimates, identifying software requirements and any other project-specific requirements.
  8. Raise technical queries to obtain missing information, clarify work scope, and to maintain preferred McDermott procedures, specifications, standards, practices and operational requirements. Prepare, review, and (as Lead Engineer) approve Discipline engineering design basis, philosophies, and technical specifications, data sheets, reports and procedures.
  9. Participate in finalizing deliverables lists and deliverables, ensuring compliance with specifications and functional integrity.
  10. Review project schedule and fabrication schedule in relation to construction sequence, milestones, model review and engineering scope.
  11. Attend project kickoff and review meetings, vendor meetings, engineering meetings and offshore site surveys, as required.
  12. Provide technical direction and review of Designers producing products related to Electrical Engineering.
  13. Attend 3D model reviews, safety workshops, constructibility review & Client meetings.
  14. Assist in providing necessary design inputs to other disciplines to enable them in proceeding with their deliverables.
  15. Assist procurement personnel in procuring Discipline equipment, materials and services; ensuring that work produced complies with Customer objectives and procedures.
  16. Assist in updating weight report based on receipt of vendor information.
  17. Review and (as Lead Engineer) approve vendor and subcontractor submittals, checking for compliance with project specifications and providing comments as necessary.
  18. Review and (as Lead Engineer) approve design verification through single-discipline check/interdiscipline check (IDC).
  19. Provide technical support to fabrication queries, including identifying defect/rectification requirements.
  20. Keep the Discipline Manager and Project Management Team apprised of all activities and concerns, technical, budgetary and manpower related.
  21. Assist in providing inputs for actual, planning and forecasting progress reports including associated productivity.
  22. Check final subcontractor and vendor data manuals to ensure that all requested data has been received and approved.
  23. Present issues and problems to Customers in a timely manner and assist Lead Engineer in negotiating resolution in accordance with project and company requirements.
  24. Perform (as required) Technical Quality Audit reviews in accordance with MOR Global Procedures.
  25. Assist Lead Engineer with responses to Customer and other agencies on their review and approval.
  26. Capture lessons learned and enter into MDR's Lessons Learned system.
  27. Capture Knowledge Objects and enter into MDR's K.now system.
  28. Guide less experienced engineers on MOR and Discipline procedures, standards, worksheets, design calculations, software, requisitions, technical bid evaluations, technical queries, etc.
  29. Supervise and guide assigned engineers and coordinate with project Lead Designers for Discipline engineering and design deliverables including quality check list and audit readiness.
  30. Responsible for the engineering integrity of the assigned work area.
  31. Monitor costs and work hrs of own work processes.
  32. Assist in the maintenance of departmental technical guidelines and standard calculation notes.
  33. Participate in development and maintenance of Global Procedures/standards & software validation.
  34. May participate in standards development committees or task groups such as API.
  35. Develop communication and presentation skills (e.g., write technical papers, participate in conferences and/or seminars, present design solutions, and/or present topics at 'lunch and learns'; value moments etc.).
  36. Identify and provide training to staff in specific techniques and proprietary software.
  37. Provide information on employee performance to the Discipline Manager.
  38. Assist Discipline manager in interviewing job applicants.
  39. Review and (as Lead Engineer) approve material lists, P&ID, etc. for Electrical equipment/systems and services.
  40. Prepare, review and (as Lead Engineer) approve lighting calculations/illumination study for platform lighting system.
  41. Prepare, review and (as Lead Engineer) approve load lists or update load lists issued by Customer.
  42. Coordinate and arrange for equipment inspection, FAT at vendor works.
  43. Participate in FAT & inspection and preparation & resolution of punch lists on arrival of skid/material.
  44. Prepare, review and (as Lead Engineer) approve spare part lists and preservation reports.
  45. Training of identified team personnel/national engineers.
  46. Review and (as Lead Engineer) approve Pre-commissioning and commissioning index and provide technical assistance on site during pre-commissioning and start-up as required.
  47. Review and provide input to secondary cable routing where detailing not done.
  48. Advise fabrication yard of installation locations for small Electrical equipment that are not sufficiently detailed in AFC drawings.
  49. Prepare, review and (as Lead Engineer) approve cable schedule & drum schedules.
  50. Identify special tools, equipment and requirements for commissioning and Hook-up.
  51. Prepare/review Hook-up installation procedures, offshore survey for tie-ins & check lists etc.
  52. Identify the materials required for offshore hook-up.
  53. Coordinate with vendors for installation and pre-commissioning including SAT.
  54. Coordinate work content split between onshore fabrication and installation and Offshore installation and Hook-up.
  55. Review and check electrical equipment list & Master Equipment list.
  56. Participate in the checking and (as Lead Engineer) approval of key discipline deliverables such as:
  57. All electrical system studies using approved software.
  58. I/O list, C&E chart and ESD logic diagrams.
  59. Specifications, Data sheets, Requisitions, TBEs.
  60. SLD, Interconnection and trouble-shooting drawings.
  61. Hazardous area classification drawings.
  62. Protection and control schematic diagrams.
  63. Electrical Load list & equipment sizing calculations.
  64. Lighting calculations, Earthing layout, Cable ladder and cable routing & lighting layout.
  65. Electrical switchgear and battery room layouts.
  66. Participate in HAZOP, HAZID, ENVID, SAFOP and SIL Studies.
  67. Provide Electrical input to pre-comm. activities and offshore hook-ups.
  68. When acting as Lead Engineer, in addition:
  69. Act as project-based Discipline point of contact in communications and meetings with Customer counterparts.
  70. Ensure substantive communications are documented.
  71. Prepare bid's and project's Discipline engineering budget and execution plans, updating as required.
  72. Identify project staff needs based on knowledge of individual engineer's skill sets and provide requests to the Discipline manager.
  73. Plan, organize and assign tasks, responsibilities, and manhour budgets to the discipline team, and verify tasks are completed within budgets.
  74. Plan Discipline Level 4 detail deliverable schedule/register compliant with the overall execution plan.
  75. Prepare working forecasts identifying change management plans, corrective action and realtime schedule.
  76. Provide Discipline inputs for actual, planning and forecasting progress reports including associated productivity.
  77. Alert project team of any deviation from the scope or a need for change order.
  78. Monitor KPI measurement results, and take corrective action as necessary to improve discipline performance, including performance at interfaces with others.
  79. Coordinate with other Discipline Lead Engineers and Designers to ensure timely receipt of necessary design inputs.
  80. Review and approve requisitions, technical quotation evaluations and queries, compiled bid tabulations and recommendations, and purchase requisitions; and coordinate with Procurement to expedite vendor documents as required.
  81. Lead the Discipline team during project audits (internal, Customer and third-party technical audits) and Design Reviews.
  82. Review comments from Customers & other agencies on documents and drawings produced by the team, and resolve and give guidance on their update and incorporation.
  83. Assist Discipline manager in the preparation of quarterly forecasts and manpower planning.
  84. Anticipate project engineering needs and plan accordingly.
  85. Coordinate with vendor for discipline managed/procured items.
  86. Assist Discipline manager and Project Engineering Manager or Project Manager in Performance Evaluation of project team members.
Essential Qualifications and Education:
  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 10+ yrs in oil and gas with major contractor or consultant predominantly performing detail design of offshore facilities
Preferred Qualifications and Education:
  • Master Degree & UPDA is Preferred
  • Preferably Registered Professional Engineer or member of professional engineering society
