Shuttering Carpenters

Key Responsibilities:

- **Formwork Construction**: Build and assemble temporary molds or forms from wood, metal, or other materials to hold freshly poured concrete in place until it sets.
- **Measurements & Layout**: Take accurate measurements on-site to ensure the formwork is the correct size and shape for the specific concrete structure. Ensure all angles and dimensions are precise.
- **Material Preparation**: Cut, shape, and fit timber, plywood, steel, and other materials used in the construction of formwork.
- **Installation & Erection**: Assemble the formwork, making sure it is properly secured, aligned, and braced to prevent shifting during the pouring of concrete.
- **Structural Support**: Install shoring, bracing, and supports to hold the formwork in place during the concrete pour. This may involve using hydraulic jacks, props, and other support systems.
- **Safety**: Ensure all formwork structures are secure and stable to prevent accidents. Adhere to safety regulations and use appropriate safety equipment.
- **Quality Control**: Inspect formwork for defects and ensure that it meets the required quality standards. Check for any leaks or gaps that may affect the concrete pour.
- **Removal of Formwork**: After the concrete has set and hardened, carefully remove the shuttering or formwork without damaging the concrete.
- **Collaboration**: Work closely with other construction teams, including concrete workers, engineers, and project managers, to ensure that formwork aligns with overall project plans and timelines.

Skills and Qualifications:

- **Experience**: Previous experience in carpentry, especially in shuttering or formwork construction, is usually required.
- **Mathematical skills**: Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings, and take accurate measurements.
- **Physical strength and stamina**: Ability to lift and handle heavy materials and work in physically demanding environments.
- **Attention to detail**: Accuracy in measurements and assembly is essential.
- **Problem-solving skills**: Ability to adapt to on-site challenges, such as uneven ground or difficult access areas.
- **Safety Awareness**: Familiarity with construction site safety practices and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- **Tools and Equipment**: Proficiency in using hand tools (saws, hammers, chisels) and power tools (drills, grinders) and equipment such as scaffolding, shoring jacks, and lifting devices.

Work Environment:

- Typically works on construction sites, often in all weather conditions.
- May involve working at heights or in confined spaces.
- Shift work or long hours may be required, especially during busy construction periods.
