Job Description

The Elementary Education Specialist will work closely with the school leadership team to develop and implement programs that support the social, emotional, and academic development of students in Grades K-5. This role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively within a multicultural school environment.

Responsibilities

  1. Social and Emotional Learning Curriculum Leadership:
    1. Develop and implement the SEL curriculum for PYP (K-2), aligning IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, the Second Step program, and Tier 1 Behavioral Interventions.
    2. Create a yearly action plan with proposed SEL themes and present it to the supervisor for approval.
    3. Collaborate with the SST to ensure consistency in SEL approaches across different support services.
  2. Student Support Team Collaboration:
    1. Work as an active member of the SST alongside Learning Support Teachers, the Learning Support Coordinator, and SEN Specialists from TLC to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to student well-being and academic success.
    2. Provide expertise in behavioral and social-emotional support as part of student intervention plans.
    3. Contribute to the development and implementation of ILPs and strategies for students requiring additional support.
    4. Participate in regular SST meetings to assess student progress and make data-driven decisions for interventions.
  3. Teacher Support and Training:
    1. Support and train PYP K-2 homeroom teachers in classroom management strategies that incorporate the Second Step Program as an antecedent intervention and other school-wide behavioral practices as consequence interventions.
    2. Assist teachers with strategies to reinforce socially acceptable behavior and respond to behaviors that may hinder healthy social, academic, and psychological development.
    3. Provide teachers with guidelines to help them determine when student behavior should be referred to the counselor.
    4. Conduct training sessions for teachers on best practices for fostering a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
  4. Student Counseling Services:
    1. Provide individual and group counseling services to students seeking support or those referred by teachers to ensure student well-being.
    2. Develop and implement behavioral intervention strategies for students struggling with emotional regulation and peer relationships.
    3. Recommend corrective measures and follow up with students to ensure positive behavior changes.
  5. Parent Engagement and Support:
    1. Organize and facilitate parent workshops on positive behavior reinforcement at home, value-based family culture, and leading with compassion.
    2. Provide parents with strategies to support their children's social-emotional growth and resilience.
    3. Maintain open and regular communication with parents regarding student well-being and intervention plans when necessary.
  6. Child Protection and Staff Well-being:
    1. Serve as a Child Protection Officer, ensuring all child protection policies are implemented and documented in accordance with school policies.
    2. Lead the PYP staff well-being cohort and serve as a member of the whole school well-being committee.
    3. Promote initiatives that enhance staff mental health and resilience.
  7. Program Development and Evaluation:
    1. Develop and maintain a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on the IB framework and school data.
    2. Use data to evaluate and refine counseling services to better meet student needs.
    3. Collaborate with the SST to align counseling goals with broader student support services.
  8. Crisis Intervention and Referral:
    1. Provide immediate support and intervention in cases of emotional crises or emergencies.
