Roles and responsibilities

We are looking to appoint a Teacher of English to join our amazing team who:

Is an outstanding and passionate practitioner
Has experience in teaching English from Grades 6 to 12
Has experience teaching English High School Diploma, IB Diploma English Language and Literature (A) or A Level equivalent would be advantageous
Is passionate about teaching and learning with a commitment to continuous improvement

Can contribute to the development of the English Department offering creative opportunities to enrich the learning experience of students at THIS
Adapts the curriculum to fit student needs while maintaining overall class progress
Assesses and records student development, while identifying problem areas and areas which need attention and improvement
Has excellent communication skills with students, colleagues, parents, and school leaders
Maintains high levels of behaviour among students, while promoting safety and compliance with school rules and guidelines
Is passionate about learning beyond the curriculum
Teaching and Instruction
Lesson Planning and Delivery: Prepare and deliver engaging lessons that cover key areas of English, such as reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and literature. Tailor lessons to the needs and abilities of individual students.
Literacy Development: Foster literacy development through targeted teaching of reading and writing skills, encouraging students to express themselves clearly and confidently.
Literature Teaching: Teach a wide range of texts, including novels, plays, poetry, and short stories. Help students analyze literary themes, characters, and language use, encouraging critical thinking and interpretation.
Language Skills: Develop students' ability to use the English language effectively, both written and spoken. Emphasize the importance of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary in all written work.
Differentiation: Adapt lessons to accommodate a variety of learning styles and abilities. Provide additional support for students with learning difficulties and offer extension activities for advanced learners.
Assessment and Feedback
Regular Assessment: Administer formative and summative assessments to track student progress. These could include written tests, quizzes, essays, presentations, or oral assessments.
Marking and Feedback: Provide constructive feedback on students' work, helping them understand their strengths and areas for improvement. Ensure that feedback is timely and helps guide future learning.
Progress Tracking: Monitor student progress over time and identify students who may need extra support. Keep accurate records of assessments and report on student performance to school leadership and parents.

Strong Subject Knowledge: A deep understanding of English language and literature, with the ability to teach complex texts and language skills in an accessible and engaging manner.
Effective Communication Skills: The ability to communicate clearly with students, parents, and colleagues, both verbally and in writing. Strong presentation skills are also essential.
Classroom Management: The ability to maintain a positive and productive classroom environment, where students are engaged, respectful, and motivated.
Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust teaching methods and resources based on the needs of individual students and the class as a whole.
Technological Proficiency: Familiarity with educational technologies, such as interactive whiteboards, online learning platforms, and digital assessment tools, to enhance teaching and student engagement.
Assessment and Data Use: Proficiency in using assessment data to monitor student progress, inform future teaching strategies, and provide personalized support.
