Roles and responsibilities
  • Leadership and Management

    • Lead and manage the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department, overseeing the development and implementation of the MFL curriculum.
    • Set clear departmental goals and objectives, ensuring they align with the overall vision of the school.
    • Manage departmental staff, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities to MFL teachers.
    • Organize and chair department meetings to discuss curriculum updates, teaching strategies, student progress, and other departmental matters.
    • Lead the recruitment, training, and performance management of MFL teachers, ensuring that they are highly motivated and well-supported.
    • Foster a positive, collaborative team environment within the department to promote effective teaching and learning.
  • Curriculum Development and Implementation

    • Oversee the planning, development, and delivery of the MFL curriculum, ensuring it is rigorous, engaging, and inclusive for students of all abilities.
    • Regularly review and update the curriculum to ensure it meets national or regional educational standards and incorporates the latest pedagogical research.
    • Develop and implement schemes of work and lesson plans for MFL teachers, ensuring consistency and high-quality delivery across all year groups.
    • Promote and integrate the use of technology in language learning, encouraging the use of digital tools, apps, and online resources.
    • Ensure the curriculum includes a variety of languages and is responsive to the needs and interests of students.
  • Teaching and Learning

    • Model excellent teaching practices in the MFL classroom, demonstrating innovative approaches to language learning.
    • Encourage the development of effective teaching strategies that promote language acquisition, fluency, and cultural understanding.
    • Implement effective assessment strategies for measuring student progress, including formative and summative assessments.
    • Monitor and evaluate teaching quality within the department, providing feedback and support to improve instructional practices.
    • Ensure that all students are given opportunities to succeed in learning foreign languages, differentiating teaching to cater to different learning styles and abilities.
  • Student Progress and Support

    • Monitor the academic progress of students in MFL, ensuring that individual learning needs are met and that students achieve their potential.
    • Organize regular assessments, reviews, and tracking systems to evaluate student progress and identify areas where additional support is needed.
    • Provide guidance and support to students experiencing difficulties with language acquisition, including intervention and enrichment programs.
    • Organize extracurricular activities such as language clubs, cultural exchange programs, or language immersion trips to enhance students' language skills and cultural awareness.
    • Ensure that students receive constructive feedback on their work and that they are motivated to improve their skills in a supportive environment.
