Roles and responsibilities

1. Leadership and Department Management

  • Manage the MFL Team: Lead and manage a team of MFL teachers, supporting their professional development, providing guidance, and fostering a positive team environment.
  • Departmental Vision: Develop and communicate a clear vision for the MFL department, ensuring it aligns with the school's overall goals and educational philosophy.
  • Recruitment and Staffing: Participate in the recruitment, hiring, and training of MFL teachers, ensuring that the department is staffed with qualified and effective educators.
  • Workload Management: Oversee the allocation of teaching hours and responsibilities within the department to ensure a balanced workload for all staff.

2. Curriculum Development and Delivery

  • Curriculum Planning: Develop, review, and update the MFL curriculum to ensure it is challenging, engaging, and in line with national standards and exams (e.g., GCSE, A-Level).
  • Subject Specialism: Provide expertise in the languages offered (e.g., Spanish, French, German) and make informed decisions about which languages to offer and how to integrate them into the broader curriculum.
  • Innovative Teaching Methods: Encourage the use of modern, creative, and diverse teaching methods, including the integration of technology, to improve student learning outcomes.
  • Differentiation: Ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of all learners, including those with special educational needs and gifted students, through differentiated instruction.

3. Assessment and Monitoring

  • Track Student Progress: Oversee assessment procedures within the department, ensuring that students' progress is regularly monitored and effectively tracked.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze student performance data to identify trends, areas for improvement, and successes. Use this data to adjust teaching practices and departmental strategies.
  • Feedback and Reporting: Ensure that students receive timely, constructive feedback on their work and progress. Oversee the preparation of reports and communication with parents regarding student achievements and areas for improvement.
  • Exams and Certification: Ensure that students are properly prepared for exams (e.g., GCSE, A-Level) by coordinating revision sessions, mock exams, and appropriate interventions.
Desired candidate profile
  • An educational degree, such as Bachelor's in Education Degree or related field.
  • A certified teaching qualification such PGCE, QTS with an Induction Certificate or equivalent (the PGCE must be accompanied by a subject relevant Bachelor's Degree)
  • Master's degree in Education or a related field (preferred).
  • Leadership Qualifications: Advanced leadership training or qualifications such as NPQSL (National Professional Qualification for Senior Leadership) or equivalent (desirable).
  • Minimum four years of experience teaching in French (international experience is an advantage but not required)
  • Exceptional subject knowledge, with extensive experience of teaching the British National Curriculum in every key stage.
