Roles and responsibilities

1. Supporting the Headteacher in Leadership

  • Assist the Headteacher in the strategic direction and leadership of the school.
  • Support in developing and implementing the school's vision, values, and ethos.
  • Deputize for the Headteacher when they are absent and help manage day-to-day operations.
  • Contribute to school decision-making processes, including planning, policies, and school improvement plans.

2. Curriculum Leadership and Development

  • Lead the development and implementation of the school curriculum in specific areas (e.g., subjects, year groups, or key stages).
  • Ensure that the curriculum is broad, balanced, and meets the needs of all students.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning, and support staff in improving their practice.
  • Lead or support assessment, tracking, and reporting of student progress.
  • Promote innovative teaching practices and the use of technology in the classroom.

3. Staff Management and Professional Development

  • Assist in the recruitment, training, and induction of new staff members.
  • Lead or support professional development initiatives for teaching and support staff.
  • Mentor and coach teachers, offering advice and guidance on pedagogy, classroom management, and professional growth.
  • Conduct performance appraisals for staff members, offering constructive feedback and setting development goals.
  • Support staff in managing workload, well-being, and professional challenges.

4. Behavior and Pastoral Care

  • Take responsibility for overseeing student behavior and discipline across the school.
  • Implement and monitor behavior management policies to ensure a safe and respectful learning environment.
  • Support students with pastoral issues, including social, emotional, and behavioral difficulties.
  • Coordinate interventions for students who may need additional support, such as those with special educational needs, emotional difficulties, or at risk of exclusion.
  • Lead or oversee programs designed to improve student well-being, such as anti-bullying initiatives, mental health support, or personal development programs.
Desired candidate profile
  • An educational degree, such as Bachelor's in Education Degree or related field.
  • A certified teaching qualification such PGCE, QTS with an Induction Certificate or equivalent (the PGCE must be accompanied by a subject relevant Bachelor's Degree)
  • Provide professional guidance to colleagues, working closely with staff, parents, and other agencies.
  • Establish high expectations of team members and students and setting challenging targets for each of them to achieve;
  • Ensure that systems and procedures are in place to enable the effective and consistent progression of all students within the cohort;
  • Promote approaches to learning and teaching that engage and motivate students and demand their active participation;
  • Strengthen learning and teaching through a programme of professional development and practical support.
