Job Description

GEMS American Academy in Qatar is currently looking for a hard-working and talented individual to join our Secondary School team. We are looking for a Head of Department for Arabic to join from August 2025.

Job Purpose

Provide professional leadership and management for the department to ensure high quality teaching of the relevant subject, effective use of resources and improved standards of achievement for pupils.

Job Scope

Overall responsibility for the effective running of the department, including management of teaching staff and resources.

Key Responsibilities include:

  1. Embrace and encourage the ethos and standards of excellence as defined in the GEMS Core Values.
  2. Deliver the required curriculum; demonstrating accurate and up to date knowledge of curriculum and subject matter.
  3. Plan and deliver quality lessons to motivate students. Create and utilise appropriate materials and the classroom environment to cater for different learning styles.
  4. Show written evidence of planning and preparation on request. Establish and maintain records of curriculum and year plans, attendance, teaching resources, assessment plans etc.
  5. Ensure the GEMS policies, procedures, and codes of conduct are followed at all times.
  6. Teach students assigned according to their individual needs using appropriate teaching strategies that meet student needs and abilities.
  7. Set and mark work. Assess, record and report on the academic development, progress and attainment of students and use assessment to ensure the curriculum meets the individual student's needs.
  8. Display competence in using media and technology in the classroom.
  9. Promote the general progress and well-being of students and provide guidance to students on educational matters.
  10. Communicate with persons outside the school where appropriate (eg Ministry of Education officials).
  11. Participate in appraisal and Performance Management procedures and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
  12. Work alongside colleagues on the preparation and development of teaching materials, resources, courses of study and pastoral arrangements.
  13. Participate in, and lead where appropriate, the co-curricular and extra-curricular programmes in the school. Promote good working relationships through active leadership and sharing of ideas, materials and experiences.
  14. Monitor and supervise safe and appropriate student behavior. Plan and implement strategies to encourage self-discipline and manage disruptive behavior.
  15. Model and encourage cultural awareness and understanding and promote a love of learning.
  16. Assist in the planning and organising of school events and functions.
  17. Communicate and meet with parents regularly promoting the GEMS philosophy and core values; keep parents regularly informed of students' progress while respecting the confidentiality of student-related information.
  18. Initiate effort and energy beyond the typical work day, where the tasks require additional commitment.
  19. Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  20. Perform other duties as requested by direct & dotted reporting line managers/supervisors.

Skills

Successful candidates will need to:

  1. Embody and role model our core values of respect, innovation, leadership, purpose and tenacity.
  2. Hold a B.Ed or Bachelors degree in relevant subject area (Arabic and Islamic Studies) with PGCE/PGDE or equivalent L5 teaching qualification.
  3. Up to date subject knowledge with proven success in raising attainment.
  4. Knowledge of the use of ICT in schools to aid teaching and learning.
  5. Team and resource management, strategic planning and decision-making. Ability to motivate a team and command respect.
  6. At least five (5) years' relevant teaching experience.
  7. Previous Head of Department experience is an advantage.
  8. Involvement in various accreditation like QNSA, NEASC, etc. Evidence of successful engagement with Qatar Ministry of Education.
  9. Excellent communication skills able to build relationships with students and colleagues and contribute to wider school life.
