Job Purpose

We are seeking a passionate and highly skilled architect to join our academic team as an Assistant / Associate Professor in Architecture. The successful candidate will contribute to high-quality teaching, curriculum development, research and engagement in professional practice. This role is pivotal to advancing the programme's strategic objectives, including promoting sustainability, fostering innovation in design education, and cultivating interdisciplinary approaches to architectural practice.

We strongly prefer candidates who are UK-qualified architects, registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and members of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), with at least five years' standing. However, we also welcome applications from individuals with equivalent international qualifications and professional recognition.

This role involves contributing to the delivery, development, and review of the curriculum for courses related to architecture, including but not limited to Architectural Technology & Environment, Design Theory & Communication, Visual Culture and Design, or Building Design.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Curriculum Development
  • Deliver high-quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate architecture programmes.
  • Design, develop, and review innovative curriculum materials, ensuring relevance to professional and academic standards.
  • Prepare and distribute course materials, schemes of work, and assessments prior to course commencement.
  • Contribute to other areas of the curriculum, particularly where architecture interfaces with sustainability, emerging technologies, and digital innovation, such as technical studies, history, theory and cultural contexts, and/or digital representation.
Student Support and Assessment
  • Provide academic tutorials for feedback on progress and formative guidance to enhance student performance.
  • Maintain records of student attendance, progress, and assessment in line with university procedures.
  • Conduct assessment and internal verification in accordance with awarding body requirements and internal quality assurance procedures.
Professional Development and Research
  • Engage in and contribute to the university's research programmes in architecture.
  • Develop and submit research funding proposals.
  • Stay up to date with advancements in architectural practice and pedagogy.
  • Maintain a strong record of published research.
Course Promotion and Industry Engagement
  • Actively participate in the promotion and management of architecture courses.
  • Foster relationships with industry partners to enhance learning opportunities for students.
Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement
  • Evaluate teaching effectiveness and course delivery through regular feedback.
  • Implement and monitor self-assessment for quality improvement.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by meeting key performance metrics, such as student satisfaction rates, peer teaching evaluations, and research output quality as measured by publications and funding secured.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participate in marketing events, seminars, and workshops.
  • Assist in identifying and monitoring work placements for students.

Qualifications and Experience (Essential)Educational Background
  • Hold a PhD in a relevant area (or have taken the viva voce) or demonstrate equivalent expertise from leading-edge industry practice.
  • Hold qualifications in Architecture, Interior Architecture, or a closely aligned sustainable design degree to at least Master's level.
Professional Qualifications
  • Registered Architect with the ARB and member of the RIBA (minimum five years' standing) preferred.
  • Alternatively, international equivalents recognised by leading architectural organisations.
Professional and Teaching Experience
  • Experience of teaching and assessing student work at the undergraduate level.
  • Familiarity with vocational qualifications such as BTEC programmes is advantageous.
  • Capability to contribute to technical studies, history, theory and cultural contexts, or digital representation.
Research and Sustainable Design
  • Strong record of published research.
  • Climate literacy and knowledge of sustainable design.
  • Candidates must be native speakers of English or possess a minimum valid IELTS score of 7.5 in the Academic category to ensure high levels of communication proficiency.
Cross-Cultural Communication
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to the challenges associated with maintaining strong cross-cultural, interpersonal, and relational interactions.
Other Skills and Expertise
  • Excellent and demonstrable design and communication skills.
  • Collaborative and team-working skills; an inter- or trans-disciplinary approach is desirable.
  • Understanding of contemporary architectural practice.
  • Experience working in a UK-style higher education system.
  • Hold a PGCertHE teaching qualification or accreditation via the UK Professional Standards Framework for Higher Education.
  • Competence in Learning Management Systems (e.g., Blackboard).
  • Previous experience in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
