Reporting to: Head of High School

The Dean of Students will guide the overall well-being support to all high school students and work collaboratively with the Grade Level Student Development Leader to build the community programme and pastoral program. The Dean of Students will provide guidance, support and mentorship to students and teachers to create a positive and nurturing learning environment that promotes a culture of care and belonging and provides developmentally relevant pastoral care for our students.

A Dean of Students will play a key role as a member of the High School Leadership Team with an emphasis on establishing vertical and horizontal collaborations to provide a supportive and conducive environment for academic and personal growth within the high school. Additionally, the Dean of Students provides leadership in our response to the intervention system and the collaboration amongst all the stakeholders to provide overall support for the well-being and learning of students in Grades 9-12. S/he will work collaboratively with the Grade Level Student Development Leaders to bring the Community Time programme and IB approaches to the learning skills programme as a way of life taking both the academic and the social-emotional aspects of it. S/he will support students transitioning between middle and high school and between the MYP and DP Programmes.

Purpose of the Role:

S/He should be able to provide professional leadership for colleagues to identify issues related to student academic and personal success from a pastoral perspective and act on the same. Staying up-to-date on current research and resources for developing positive relationships, maintaining open communication, and demonstrating a collegial approach between all school stakeholders is essential.

The Dean of Students serves as a liaison between the Grade Level Student Development Leader and the High School Leadership Team so that school-level decisions are informed by ongoing, two-way communication between teachers and other school leaders.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, counseling, or similar fields is preferred.
  • Minimum five years of teaching and/or counseling experience.
  • Preferred experience serving as assistant principal, counselor, or related role in an IB MYP/ DP school.
  • Experience in various roles of leadership.
  • Ability to work independently and make effective decisions.
  • Have strong technological skills and proficiency in Microsoft Teams, OneNote, and Microsoft 365, or a willingness and ability to learn the necessary skills quickly.
  • Proficient in written and oral English and excellent communication skills with students, school staff, and parents, along with a collaborative work ethic.

  • Have a caring, supportive and understanding nature and act as an advocate for students.
  • Have the ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload.
  • Be accomplished in building relationships with students, parents and colleagues and establishing strong, supportive, and collaborative partnerships.
  • Have a high level of understanding of current learning research as to how high school-aged children learn and possess the ability to motivate colleagues and students to perform at their best.
  • Have awareness and understanding of current developments and best practices related to SEL and response to intervention structures for discipline and pastoral care.
  • Be resourceful and innovative in developing and implementing the vision, strategy, curriculum and best pedagogical practices across academic, pastoral and transition programs.
  • Be able to lead through a culture of collaboration and belonging.

Responsibilities:

  • To lead and oversee a response to intervention process for pastoral care and behavior management in the HS.
  • To lead and guide the continued development and implementation of HS Community Time in collaboration with the Grade Level Student Development Leaders to support the academic, social, and emotional growth of students in the specific grade level.
  • To co-lead the student transition process, specifically between Grades 8/9, providing support to students, parents, and grade level teachers to ensure a smooth transition across divisions of the school.
  • To coordinate with HS teachers, HS Counselors, and wider Inclusion and Safeguarding team about student wellbeing needs, interventions, and progress monitoring.
  • To act as a point of contact for, and facilitate productive conversations between, students, parents, and/or teachers in order to promote positive student behavior, well-being, and self-management.
  • To serve as a valued member of the High School Leadership Team and contribute to a culture of collaboration and belonging. To attend and contribute to regular High School Leadership Team collaborative meetings.
  • To collaborate with HSLT members, Head of Inclusion, and HS teachers in the identification, intervention, and monitoring of student behavior and wellbeing.
  • To maintain and regularly review student discipline and attendance records in alignment with our education philosophy.
  • To lead the development of systems and processes which promote student personal and academic success.
  • To provide students, teachers, and parents with clear communication and a coherent, efficient, and effective high school experience.
  • To actively participate in professional development activities.
  • To conduct supportive (non-evaluative) peer observations and walkthroughs (on agreement with relevant parties), provide instructional coaching, and lead professional learning, in collaboration with the Director of Learning, Innovation and Analytics to make informed decisions regarding the pastoral program and identify possible interventions to support teachers and students.
