**_ Context:_**

IOM’s operations in Qatar cover diverse thematic areas such as: Humanitarian Relief
Assistance, Protection, Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) and Non-food items,
Non-formal Education, Health and Resettlement, and Movement Management.

Under the overall supervision of the Senior Protection Coordinator, and in collaboration with

relevant teams onsite, the Project Officer (Cultural Mediator/Interpreter) will be responsible and
accountable for the following:
**_ Core Functions / Responsibilities:_**

1. Supervise and/or monitor the work of the cultural mediators/interpreter team, composed of
senior cultural mediators and cultural mediators’ assistants, and coordinate their activities and
workplans (scheduling and assigning cultural mediators), in close coordination with the Senior
Protection Coordinator.

2. Check that communication with program beneficiaries is accurate, efficient, timely, sensitive,
and compliant with program guidelines by periodically reviewing both translations and ad-hoc
translation delivery and troubleshooting issues that arise as needed. Translate documents,
correspondence and other materials from English into Dari or Pashto (and vice versa), acquiring
highly accurate and clear rendition of the original version, and often working to a tight deadline.

3. Within delegated authority, consolidate the different interpretation and translation requests
received from various Protection sub-units (Protection case workers, mental health and
psychosocial support [MHPSS] staff), and schedule and assign interpretation assistance to IOM
Protection and MHPSS teams to communicate with Afghan guests in Camp as Sayliyah (CAS)
by interpreting accurately between Dari and/or Pashto and English during activities, such as
workshops, individual case management, counselling sessions, support group sessions, focus
group discussions, socio-relational activities and events.

4. Coordinate closely with Protection and MHPSS to organize trainings targeting cultural
mediators/interpreters on Protection principals and topics (such as confidentiality, child friendly
communication, safeguarding and basic case management) and the Community based Mental
Health and Psychosocial Support approach. Organize and facilitate trainings on cultural
mediation, interpretation, respectful terminology to Protection, MHPSS and other units as
needed.

5. Accompany or facilitate support needed to accompany guests to appointments or meetings
where necessary (e.g. medical visits) in close coordination with Protection and MHPSS teams
and provide interpretation, often on sensitive topics; promptly inform the supervisor about
vulnerable cases.

6. Draft briefings, statistical/narrative reports, background information and regular reports
covering interpretation/translation activities as required; as appropriate, respond to specific
information requests from partners and other entities.

7. Participate in hiring processes for the mission, including conducting language testing for
member with a focus on language skills.

8. Uphold data protection principles of case files at all times.

9. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
