Senior Journalist

**Main Purpose/Job Summary**
Produce and support creative and engaging news and Programmes material to an exceptionally high standard for daily, next day or longer-term coverage news and programmes.
**Main Duties & Responsibilities**:

- Research, Write, translate and adapt items, news stories or programme material and to edit packages at the desktop
- Take the lead of In-House reporting for major bulletins and breaking news
- To keep up to date with main news stories and undertake background research and checking on factual information
- Flexible and prepared to take on any role required by the Producers, Senior Producers and Executive Producers in response to the needs of the Newsroom
- Occasional deployment in the field for specific projects requiring technical expertise and editorial judgement
- Maintain an accurate, comprehensive and up to date version of diaries and contacts
- Manage a moving story, amending and updating material as required to build compelling and engaging news material
- Present live or recorded TV slots and segments if required
- Liaise with producers, gathering information and advice on stories and coverage
- Provide ideas and suggestions for news output, stories and attend pre programme and planning and editorial meetings
- To work with technical systems and manage a range of video, audio and digital equipment and other technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes to an exceptional high standard whilst in the appropriate medium
- Maintain knowledge of the changes in the media industry and upcoming digital transformation and its uses
- Gather information and advice on running stories from the field by fact finding and undertaking background research to support the Newsroom
- Promote and encourage team work and collaboration across the business
- To be responsible for a moving story, amending and updating material as required in order to produce compelling and engaging news sequences.
- To think through and around editorial problems.
- To liaise closely with other team members and with contributors, reporters.
- To undertake pre and post production and studio work, live and pre-recorded. After appropriate training, use a range of video, audio & digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
- To produce graphics at the desktop and in collaboration with graphic designers.
- To be familiar with different technical systems, including news production systems, demonstrate a willingness to learn to operate new technology systems and to be able to adapt to different working methods.
- To, understand changes in the media industry and upcoming digital transformation and the use of modern technologies.
- To be in good knowledge of the News and Current affairs of the MENA region and worldwide
- To observe and carry out any requirement outlined in Alaraby’s safety.
- To carry out the above duties and responsibilities in accordance with applicable legal, including broadcast regulations, specifically in accordance with the Ofcom Code.

**Essential**:

- Provides and demonstrates strategic, conceptual and analytical skills including a solid understanding of Journalistic and Editorial knowledge and judgement.
- Able to work with minimum supervision within a fast paced environment and achieve objectives
- Proven track record of delivering what is required within tight deadlines and to an exceptionally good standard
- Works with precision, accuracy and applies a high attention to detail
- Effective communications and presentation skills using multimedia tools
- Demonstrates flexibility by adapting and working effectively in a variety of situations whilst appreciating different and opposing perspectives and able to adapt own style and approach to deal with differing situations
- Approachable manner that encourages positive interaction with colleague, teams and others
- Proven Analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills
- A full command and up to date knowledge of spoken and written modern standard Arabic language of a high standard
- Able to write, adapt and translate with accuracy, clarity and style as appropriate to different audience groups and media groups and articulate and able to communicate effectively at a professional broadcasting standard.

- Appreciates and understands the benefits and importance of social media and digital technologies
- Excellent understanding of editorial guidelines and able to identify trends and potential issues
- Dealing with live ‘breaking news’ and developing ideas resulting in turning into successful creative programme with speed
- Able to demonstrate a very good understanding of news and current affairs programmes and the types of audiences they attract
