Job Summary and Purpose

The Second Engineer Officer is the Chief Engineer's deputy, responsible for understudying the Chief Engineer Officer in all aspects of his managerial, professional, and commercial duties with a view to qualifying himself for eventual promotion. He must keep an engine room watch, or, on UMS ships, act as a duty engineer in rotation.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Engine Room Safety and Operations
    • Ensure the safety of all personnel working under his supervision.
    • Organize and execute engine room watch keeping and machinery operating routines.
    • Maintain, operate, and upkeep all parts of the engine room, ensuring proper performance of maintenance in accordance with the integrated work plan.
    • Conduct routine boiler water, feed water, and cooling water chemical tests, reporting any abnormalities to the Chief Engineer.
  2. Technical Supervision
    • Supervise the engine room workforce, as delegated by the Chief Engineer Officer, including the spare gear/stores Petty Officer, engine room Petty Officer, Motorman, and ratings assigned to the engine room for specific maintenance or repair tasks.
    • Supervise the Pumpman P.O when allocated to pump room and/or engine room maintenance duties.
    • Ensure compliance with fire fighting and safety equipment regulations, including fixed fire fighting equipment, and safe practices in the engine room.
    • Carry out any lawful command and delegated duty as issued by the Chief Engineer and/or Master.
Competencies and Qualifications
  1. Leadership and Management
    • Effective budget control and financial management.
    • Strong communication skills, including written and spoken English to a high standard.
  2. Technical Expertise
    • Experience with cargo transfer operations, including STS, Co-mingling, COW, Inert Gas, LNG discharge, and emergency operations.
    • Knowledge of multinational crew management and operations.
    • Personal safety, ship safety, and environmental protection.
  3. Education and Certifications
    • Class 2 certification.
