Key Accountabilities:
Role Purpose:
The Head of Library and Curation of Rare Books works alongside the curatorial group, reporting to the Deputy Director of Curatorial Affairs. They provide the expertise on the Museum’s collections, required to deliver the Museum’s programmes and work in close collaboration with the Education Department in the development and delivery of public and staff programmes. The head of Library and Curation of Rare Books is responsible for the Orientalist Museum’s collections of Rare books, and in particular, cataloguing, research and publications, contributing to display and exhibition development, development of the content of the website, and teaching at all levels. They are expected to deal with questions relating to the collections from all areas within the Museum and academic and public enquiries outside. The Head of Library and Curation of Rare Books is responsible for the development, implementation and management of the museum library, including strategy, policies and operations.
Duties & Responsibilities:

- Conceptualizes and executes all aspects of project development and implementation at the highest professional standards, including research, writing, presentations, budgeting, and coordination with project stakeholders
- Makes acquisition recommendations for objects or collections of interest to top management
- Writes scopes for exhibition vendors and services
- Conducts tours to explain key exhibition themes to internal stakeholder departments
- Reviews project and consultancy contracts with legal team
- Develops museums and exhibition interpretation and public programs with education team
- Writes essays for exhibition catalogues, scholarly articles for internal and external publications
- Presents at conferences and network with external museums and curators
- Supports the overarching museum vision and strategy in all areas of the described role
- Develops the museum strategy relating to acquisitions and collection development
- Represent the Library in local, regional and international contexts and develop interlibrary cooperation, especially with Qatar National Library and local library systems. This includes developing a library book exchange program
- Oversees selection, acquisition, processing and maintenance of all library resources (books, journals, dvds and rare books)
- Develops Library security and audit functions
- Develops annual budget for Library in line with overarching goals of Museum
- Negotiates departmental staffing and work plans; complete annual staff appraisals and ensure regular follow-up on allocated tasks within the Section; make all staff aware of their roles and responsibilities and ensure effective communications and training
- Supervises junior staff development and training in line with agreed goals of the Museum
- Recruits new staff for Library as appropriate
- Ensures regular communication with Museum Management about activities within library section
- Supports the work of all staff and encourage an atmosphere of cooperation and mutual trust within the team
- Other tasks as requested by Museum Management
Qualifications/Requirements:

- BA in Library Studies, History of Books or similar.
- M.A, MPhil or Ph.D. in Library Studies or History of Books is highly preferred.
- Recognised qualifications and be an expert in a field relevant to the Museum with substantial, relevant practical research with a minimum of 3 years.
- Managerial experience is desirable. Experience of computer-based cataloguing in multi-language environments
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills
- Demonstrated skills in policy and procedure development and implementation, and in the management of staff
- Knowledge of Arabic and experience of the Middle-East and of Museums an advantage
- Language proficiency in English/Arabic
- Must demonstrate ability to learn about and participate in all aspects of the library work environment, policies, procedures, technology, terminology and participating in achieving the goals of the library
- Strong IT and technology skills
- Strong organizational and analysis skills and ability to implement appropriate solutions
- Excellent communications skills and polite and courteous manner
- Ability to work independently and with flexibility in dealing with new projects and roles
- Must be accurate and demonstrate high degree of attention to detail
- Must be proactive self-starter, willing to take initiative and possess a problem-solving attitude to accomplish work goals and tasks
- Proof of independent research, publications and articles with respected journals and institutions
- Proof of academic papers presented at international conferences
- Proof of exhibition development and delivery as sole curator
