Like all members of the kitchen team, the Commis Chef must maintain high standards of health and safety, including personal hygiene. You will be responsible for producing the most creative and excellent dishes, ensuring that the guests expectations are exceeded and fully satisfied. The person in this position must be able to effectively communicate with other members of the kitchen team, this includes being able to gracefully receive constructive criticism as well as effectively carry out orders. Additionally, a Commis Chef also needs to be able to remain calm while multi-tasking, as they are often called upon to carry out many different orders simultaneously in a brief amount of time. The Commis Chef is a part of the kitchen team, and as such must be able and willing to perform the basic tasks of food preparation and organization in the kitchen. This ability to create excellence in your own area of responsibility and to support others as they do the same is vital to the successful operation of the kitchen and to ensure the enjoyment of guests.
1. Food Preparation:
Assist in the preparation of ingredients, including chopping vegetables, cutting meats, and preparing sauces or garnishes.
Follow recipes, instructions, and kitchen procedures to ensure consistency and high-quality dishes.
Measure and weigh ingredients as required by the recipes and ensure proper storage of unused ingredients.
2. Cooking Assistance:
Work under the supervision of senior chefs to cook and prepare dishes, including grilling, sautéing, frying, baking, and other cooking methods.
Ensure that food is cooked to the correct temperature and quality before serving.
Monitor food preparation and presentation to maintain consistency in appearance and taste.
3. Station Organization:
Maintain an organized and clean workstation, ensuring that all tools and equipment are easily accessible.
Stock the station with necessary ingredients, tools, and supplies before the shift begins and throughout service.
Ensure proper mise en place (everything in its place) before service begins to ensure smooth operation during busy periods.
High School degree
Previous experience in a Food & Beverage/Restaurant operations role
Passion for teamwork
Excellent guest service skills
Knowledge of basic preparation, presentation and preservation of food
Basic knowledge of hygiene and safety procedures
Basic Cooking Knowledge: Familiarity with kitchen equipment, ingredients, and cooking techniques.
Food Safety and Hygiene: Understanding of food safety standards and cleanliness in food preparation and handling.
Attention to Detail: Ability to follow recipes and instructions precisely to ensure consistent quality.
Teamwork: Ability to work as part of a team in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
Time Management: Efficient in managing time and multitasking to meet service demands.
3. Experience:
Minimum Experience: Entry-level position, so minimal professional experience is required. Some experience in a kitchen environment, whether through internships, apprenticeships, or previous culinary jobs, is an advantage.
Preferred Experience: Any prior experience in a kitchen as a kitchen assistant, prep cook, or similar role.
